The Rt Hon. the Viscount Thurso FIH MI

With an impressive background in the hospitality industry, Lord Thurso FIH MI was Managing Director of the Savoy Group’s Lancaster 5-Star Hotel in Paris at the age of 27 before progressing to lead a number of hospitality businesses including East Sussex National Golf Course, Champneys and Cliveden, which under his leadership, became the UK’s highest rated hotels.

He has served as a non-executive member on a number of public company boards and is Chairman of the family company in Caithness. In 2016 he was appointed Chair of Visit Scotland and serves as an Ex-Officio Board Member of Visit Britain. He was awarded a ‘Catey’ for services to Tourism in 2003, is President of the Tourism Society, a Fellow of The Institute of Hospitality and a Master Innholder.

He served in the House of Lords as a hereditary peer until 1999, was elected to the House of Commons as MP for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross until 2015 and returned to the House of Lords in 2016.

As the President of the Institute of Hospitality, Lord Thurso FIH MI acts as an ambassador, helping to shape the Institute’s strategy and participates in its annual activities.

The Articles of Association are the rules by which the Institute of Hospitality is administered.  The election of members of the Supervisory Board, running of meetings, organisation of regions and rules of voting are among the issues covered.

The Bye-Laws govern the membership of the Institute of Hospitality including the ways in which it can be achieved, the mechanisms for upgrading and the rules of conduct of members. Procedures for complaints against members, appeals and decision-making processes by the Institute are also covered.

A vacancy on the Institute of Hospitality Supervisory Board has become available and needs to be filled, in line with the constitution.

All fully paid-up Fellows and Members, who have been members for a minimum of 12 consecutive months, are invited to put their names forward for consideration.

Many members feel, at some stage in their careers, that they would like to “put something back”, in recognition of the reward and success they have enjoyed. Serving on the Institute’s Board enables members to make a real and valuable contribution to the strategic direction of their Institute.

The role of Supervisory Board member carries director and trustee level responsibilities, with successful candidates required to participate in virtual Supervisory Board meetings on a quarterly basis.

In addition, board members are expected to attend all major Institute of Hospitality events and be prepared to participate actively in the development and promotion of the Institute’s strategic and policy initiatives.

A person specific criteria for the post is available upon request, and will be sent to anyone expressing an interest in joining our Supervisory Board.
